USAF Pilot Training Class 52-G
Philip M. "Phil" Alden
52-G Malden Vance
Military Service
· After
graduation from Cadets, joined the 37th Troop Carrier Squadron at
Sewart AFB, Tennessee.
· Transitioned
to C-119s and also served as co-pilot for several deliveries of Sikorsky H-19
helicopters from the factory in Connecticut.
· Transferred
to Neubiberg AB, a former Luftwaffe fighter base outside Munich, Germany in
September, 1953, to join the 41st TCS—C-119s again!
· Flew
throughout Europe, the British Isles, the Middle East and as far as East
Pakistan (now Bangladesh) for the next two years.
· Most
missions involved carrying troops or supplies, but did some paradropping as well.
· Served
as instructor and base standardization/check pilot during much of 1955.
· Discharged
as a 1st Lt. at end of September, 1955
Business Career
· Joined
management consulting firm Towers, Perrin, Forster & Crosby, Inc. in
Philadelphia as a pension consultant trainee, December, 1955.
· Transferred
to New York office, September, 1956. Specialized in design and installation of
pension, profit-sharing and other employee benefit plans for large corporations.
· Named
Vice President and manager of the company’s Cleveland Office in 1968.
· Relocated
to Company headquarters in New York in 1979; named U.S. Practice Manager for
Employee Benefits Consulting.
· Took
early retirement, January, 1986.
Aviation
· After
10-year hiatus, resumed flying in 1965 and joined a flying club at White Plains,
NY (HPN).
· Acquired
a 1966 Beech Debonair in 1972; used for both pleasure and business flying.
· Purchased
a new A36 Bonanza in 1997. Still actively involved in flying self, friends and
family. Have flown to destinations in all 48 contiguous states and to most
Caribbean and Central American countries.
Personal
· B.
A. graduate of Wesleyan University, 1951
· Married
Nancy Joy Arms in June, 1953, after her graduation from Simmons College, Boston.
· After
leaving USAF, settled in Larchmont, NY. Later lived in Shaker Heights, Ohio.
Moved to Naples, Florida in 1995. Spend summers (5 months) at lakeside home in
Vermont.
· Have
3 sons, each married and with two children. All perfect, of course…
· Served
as officer and/or director of numerous organizations since retirement.
· With
Jack Gilliland, Randy Presley, Chuck Miller and others, was actively involved in
formation of the 52-G Association in 1991-92
· Hobbies
include photography, computers, flying (of course), audio/video production and
singing (member of, and emcee for, the Naples Barbershop Chorus).
